Four Tips for Modeling New Buttons
- Intention: Before even introducing a new button, I make sure to introduce the word in advance. For example, if I am introducing potty, I call it potty and potty only. Not tinkle, pee, use that bathroom, etc. Additionally plan ahead the words you'd like to teach and use those words in your everyday vocab. I call this "button speak."
- Narration: Every time the word you are introducing is happening, use it! Narrate all day! EX: Baxter want go potty? Potty now, Baxter. Good potty, Baxter. Potty all done. More potty later. Mama go potty, now. Wait for Mama, please.
- Modeling: Once you feel your learner knows the word you'd like to introduce, do some button target practicing on and off the hextile. (See videos 1 &4).
- Repetition: Repeat steps 1-3 until and well after your learner is now pressing to reinforce.
